VHIO strives to eliminate language barriers in healthcare settings by providing trained volunteer interpreters from UC Berkeley to healthcare organizations and facilities for underserved, limited English proficient (LEP) communities in the Bay Area.

Currently, we have official training and established volunteering opportunities for Cantonese, Mandarin, Khmer, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese interpreters. In our goal to reach out to more populations, we welcome speakers of other languages to help us expand our language capacities.

VHIO helped the California Pacific Medical Center at their hepatitis B and C screening at the annual Asian Heritage Festival. The CPMC’s Hep B and C screening went really well. Over 90,000 people attended the festival, and approximately 50 people were screened. The American Liver Foundation passed out surveys and educated the public on liver disease.
