Community Outreach and Screening
To inform the community about the free or low-cost services provided by the clinics run by partner organizations and to promote awareness about various health issues, VHIO interpreters often assist with grass-roots community outreach, such as mobile screening and education in Autumn Moon Festival street celebration, Chinese New Year celebration, Cherry Blossom Festival, or simply church or temple-sponsored health fairs that require language concordance with the target audience.
Volunteers present health information by street fair tabling, oral presentations, interactive workshops, and flyering. Topics of the community outreach events have included hepatitis B, blood sugar and cholesterol, blood pressure, colon cancer, skin cancer, and disaster preparedness.
In both outreach and screening events, VHIO interpreters provide crucial language assistance that bridges the language barrier between the health workers and the community members.
Outreach Committees
Besides interpreter requests by partner organizations, our Korean and Vietnamese Outreach Committees work to establish connections and offer interpretation and volunteering services to various organizations.
The VHIO Korean Outreach Committee has presented hepatitis B information in numerous Korean community centers, churches, and senior centers, as well as serving in many follow-up screening events.
The VHIO Vietnamese Outreach Committee is reaching out to the Vietnamese community through temples, community centers, public service announcements, and local Vietnamese newspapers, resulting in several outreach and screening events specific for Vietnamese communities.
Speaker’s Bureau
The Speaker’s Bureau of the SF Hep B Free campaign is an organized community outreach project that VHIO has provided assistance and support for since the fall of 2010. The Speaker’s Bureau recruits and trains volunteers to become fluent speakers in presenting hepatitis B information at small businesses and community settings.
Alzheimer’s Services of the East Bay
Volunteering with Alzheimer’s Services will be on an individual basis. Please contact us for details if you are interested. The site is on Channing Way and is just a short walk from campus. Volunteering hours during the week are flexible.
CACCC End of Life Care
The Chinese American Coalition for Compassionate Care helps with end of life/hospice care. Volunteers provide simultaneous interpretation, for which there is a specific training. Most of the outreach events are based in San Jose or Sacramento.
Labor Coaching
(For female volunteers only) Be a labor coach and help with labor and delivery in Oakland. You will be on call and must be ready to assist your patient any time. An application is required; please contact us for details.
SRO-CHIP
VHIO is helping with the Community Health Initiation Project with UCSF to hold workshops educate Single Room Occupancy (SRO) residents on a spectrum of healthcare topics ranging from proper hand-washing to domestic violence to disaster preparedness. VHIO helps to train students from SF high schools to serve as interpreters for the SRO residents; we also help with the interpretation at the workshops. We plan to increase our involvement in the future. In the meantime, please contact us for details if you would like to help with interpretation or curriculum development.
