Korean Community Health Services 5K

April 1, 2012 2 comments

Come support Korean Community Health Services by participating in the 5th annual 5K walk. Partnering with the Korean Daily, KCHS will receive more funding if more people attend. This is a fun event with performances, lunch, a KCHS t-shirt, a great view of Lake Merritt, and a chance to meet other VHIO members.

This year, our Korean Outreach Chairs Anita Lee and Jihwan Yu have been in charge of planning this event, along with a committee of VHIO Korean members. It will take place in the morning of Saturday April 28th, at the beginning of RRR week so it will be a nice way to relax and work out before studying!

If you’re curious to learn more about the event, you may view pictures from last year here.

Multicultural Health and Wellness Fair at Oakland

November 20, 2011 Leave a comment

VHIO provided interpretation services at Regeneration Church. Over 300-400 people came so we deem it to be pretty successful. VHIO members helped out with registration and interpreted for screenings (blood pressure, BMI, eyes), flu shot immunization, and at the HealthPAC workshop.

Kristine, one of our Vietnamese volunteers, was also asked what Hepatitis B was and so, had the chance to apply Decal material she learned in a real-life situation!

Since there not many Chinese speaking patients who needed interpreters, our Chinese volunteers helped out with directing patients to screening, serving food among other tasks.

New Collaboration with Partners in D

September 27, 2011 Leave a comment

We are pleased to announce that VHIO will be collaborating with Partners in D, a UCSF student-run project. They have outreach clinics where student pharmacists counsel patients on their medications assess the best drug combination and help them find the most cost-effective plan under Medicare Part D. I have interpreted for them before and personally found it very rewarding. Since they work with the under-served community, the project really means a lot to the patients because we can help them lower costs.

Interpreters are needed for Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) and Spanish. Please come to the info session at the end of our Decal: it will be from 7:15-8pm this Thursday 9/29 in B51 Hildebrand. The coordinators will be coming from UCSF to give a presentation.

SRO-CHIP Update

September 25, 2011 Leave a comment

As guest speaker Wendy Tseng discussed during our orientation, VHIO volunteers have the opportunity to participate in SRO-CHIP, the Single-Room Occupancy Community Health Initiative Project. Led by UCSF students, it aims to promote health and wellness is SF’s SRO residents by giving a series of workshops. VHIO volunteers can help in developing the curricula for the workshops as well as providing interpretation and designing skits to perform during the workshops. The dates and times are listed under the Events tab. We will send out reminder emails for those of you who want to participate.

Korean Outreach Update

August 1, 2011 Leave a comment

We are continuing to volunteer at monthly KCHS clinics. The BMI/BP clinic takes place at the recently established Oakland Senior Center. The Hep B vaccination clinic has been focusing on outreach to recruit more patients. It seems difficult for Koreans to come to the hour-long vaccination since many have to work on weekends, or they forget. Any outreach ideas are appreciated.

We are also continuing with the monthly Alta Bates Mammogram clinic, which includes a verbal interview and breast examination with the nurse practioner, in addition to a mammogram taken by a technician.

There is a Korean Cancer Conference on September 10th. This is the first time that this conference is being held, and we need as much help as we can get! There is a good chance there would be much
Korean interpretation involved.

SF Hep B Collaborative Outreach

July 14, 2011 1 comment

Due to low patient turnout at Mt. Zion hep B clinics, VHIO volunteers will help UCSF volunteers with flyering. We are targeting the Richmond area, which is a bus-ride away from Mt. Zion. Please help with these community outreach efforts on Saturday July 30th, from 1-3pm. Mt. Zion might close if we continue to have few new patients!

As part of the new targeted neighborhood outreach approach, the San Francisco Hepatitis B Collaborative (SFHBC) is planning a screening in the Tenderloin in September.

Based on data assessment, SFHBC is looking into targeting the Southeastern part of San Francisco, as hep B screening has been relatively low there. SFHBC is also planning to reach recent immigrant populations, who are less likely to have been vaccinated and more likely to be chronic carriers.

Hep B Clinic Outreach

July 1, 2011 1 comment

Due to low patient flow, we are implementing new outreach efforts, including a Wong Fu video to target the younger population and contacting other hep B clinics in SF to set up collaborations. Please contact us if you can assist with contacting clinics! UCSF SFHBC students are working full time and they need our help.
